Let me take you back to 2003 , 7 years ago there was the EU Referendum . In this referendum the Partit Laburista was telling us all sorts of things about the EU . They were saying that the EU would cause the fabric industries to close , that bombs from other European countries would fly over Malta and that VAT would be sky high. Of course the Maltese electorate chose not to listen to the PL and chose to join the EU .
Now 7 years later the PL is presenting a team of candidates for the upcoming EP elections , obviously almost all of these candidates were previously against the EU. I believe that in life you should look ahead and so I believe that these candidates should be judged on their ability and now that Malta is in the EU they will accept this fact. However out of all these candidates there is one candidate who's past is so anti-EU that it is impossible not to mention it. I am referring to none other than Sharon Ellul Bonnici .
If there was ever an award for the most Euro skeptic person in Malta , Sharon would win it hands down ! She formed the infamous group NO2EU , a group which campaigned heavily against the EU . I'll never forget me at 11 years old watching a particular episode of Xarabank and witnessing Sharon on the verge of TEARS since Malta were close to joining the EU . Now 7 years later she is presenting herself as woman who is looking ahead and with her slogan 'Sharon 4 Malta' she intends to fight for the rights of the maltese. If she wants to talk about the present , lets talk about the present . Sharon Ellul Bonnici has spent the past 5 years traveling regularly to Brussels and has taken part in a Euro-skeptic group !
I honestly don't know Sharon's reason for wanting to be in the European Parliament , does she want to give the impression that Malta is a euro-sceptic country ? How can this woman be trusted to represent the Maltese public in the EP ? How can the PL accept such a euro-sceptic person on their ticket after spending years trying to assure the Maltese public that the EU issue is closed ? These are questions which need answering .

Your stupidity is unbelievable...
ReplyDeleteFirst of all try to be cautious of what you are alleging in your blog post regarding PL candidates' opinions in 2003...
You choose to lambastes SEB for contesting the MEP elections because she used to be a Euro-sceptic (note that "sceptic" is written with a 'c' and not with a 'k'). Don't you know that even in PN's line-up there are candidates who used to doubt EU membership? For instance one cannot forget the case of Vince Farrugia or Alex Perici Calascione. Politics goes beyond our shores and maybe you should take note of what right wing politicians believe in other countries. Not only they are against the EU, they also believe that Euro-sceptics would make the best politicians in the EP!!!!
I know that being in your teenage years you may be seeing politics from an amusing perspective. One thing that you have to keep in mind is that you cannot attack Labour when everywhere around the world the right-wing movements have caused a total mess.
Even in Malta, the Nationalist Party is no longer a right-wing party (except for hidden agendas) but a party of opportunism that is willing to sacrifice its prinicples to keep holding power. In fact you really astound me for the sole thing that you never write anything about Austin Gatt's ways of doing politics, Gonzi's contradicting statements about the water and electricity tariffs, George Pullicino's mess with the ODZ's, etc.
You really surprise me. Honestly I thought that Maltese youth had a more unbiased opinion of local Politics. Hope that you are an exception!
Watch this mate. It will spark your enthusiasm for the NP because there is nothing better to love it for:

Dear Carl ,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all me don't call me stupid . If there is one person who is stupid it is you for saying that Vince Farrugia was against the EU . Sure he was in 1993 but unlike SEB he does not have a whole history of opposing the EU !!
You also mentioned that the right wing movements caused a mess ? This is debatable and I would like to talk to you more about this .
It is true that at the moment the government is not doing a good job . But only God knows what this country would be like under Joseph Muscat . The man wants to re-open Eu negotiations !
I am not biased I just hate when people say something and then change their opinion !
For your information I believe in Social Conservatism therefore I am highly against the tariffs and when I find the time I will be posting an article against them . However this question of SEB has really got me mad , seeing a woman who was completely against the EU , now denying this fact .
First of all I wish to excuse myself for the harsh remarks in my first contribution.
ReplyDeleteYou must have been much younger when Vince Farrugia campaigned against the EU. Just to remind you he is one of the culprits that shouted "hurrah" when Labour removed VAT and replaced by CET. The latter was shot down and also characterly assasinated by the NP who joined forces with other opportunistic figureheads like Gejtu Vella and Co. (Pity that he did not return to block the Freeport Entrance when the recent tariffs were announced).
You may have been referring to U-turns...you may call SEB's act as a U-Turn. It does not bother me as long as it is in the right direction. Social Conservatives are famous for these type of beliefs about the EU and now they are serving their respectives parties in the EP. They are still Euro-sceptics and can boast that their attitude in Brussels have brought results to their homelands. This makes me think that hadn't been for the partisan disgusting media of the local PN, SEB would still have said that she is against the EU!
The thing is that the Nationalist Party is still thinking with the same mind before our accession in order to try and get more political mileage. But in reality European citizens prefer people like SEB who are sure that won't behave as yes-men up there.
The mess I've mentioned upwards is the sole responsibility of right-wing monetary policies my friend. Unfortunately conservatives are only so when it comes for social issues and not for the economy. To explain myself better, right wing politicians are self-decepted that the invisible hand of the market really do exist. In fact IT DO NOT.
p.s. in your comment you have mistaken Joseph Muscat with Alfred Sant. The idea of revising negotiations isn't as bad as it may sounds. After all we are still in the dark about lots of things which actually weren't negotiated let alone negotiatiated fairly.
There are very few Social Conservatives who are pro-European Union in all the tree concepts of politics: economic, social and philosophical aspects. In fact these type of parties have regulary shifted to far-left policies in attempt to widen their grasp onto the market.
ReplyDeleteI really don't blame you for your misconception about the political spectrum and the EU. The whole thing got messed By Freddie u Eddie when both of them turned everything into a colourful blue vs. red hullahoop! Infact the co-founders of the EU concept and today's pro-union are the very best Socialists of the European continent such as Rasmussen, Verheugen and Romano Prodi.
Just to clarify my point in the comment below, in the paragraph before the last I was referring to the shameful Christian Democrats.
